How this forecast is built
- Models: HRRR (3 km, 0–48 h), NBM (2.5 km, ~11 days), ECMWF IFS (9 km, ~15 days), GFS, Canadian GEM, DWD ICON and UK Met Office. Each hour is a weighted average of the models that reach that far out.
- Calibration: each model's archived forecasts were checked against what the nearest snow station measured over the last three winters. Each model gets a correction for how much it typically under- or over-forecasts there, and a weight based on how well it tracked real storms. Resorts without a station borrow the nearest calibrated resort's numbers.
- Snow ratio: snow water is turned into inches of snow using a temperature-based ratio (Kuchera method), reduced for strong winds.
- Range: 82 ensemble runs (GFS + ECMWF ensembles) give the 10th–90th percentile spread, scaled to the blend.
- History: station snow depth from NRCS SNOTEL (US) or Environment Canada (Whistler). New snow is estimated from depth gains, which runs a little low because fresh snow settles.
Data: Open-Meteo, NRCS SNOTEL, Environment Canada, OpenSkiMap. These are computer model numbers, not a human forecaster's call.
